On June 1st, Honey Dijon returns for a day-into-night, indoor-outdoor takeover. These multistage, 12+ hour long fêtes are some of the most fun events we put on, with the headliner doing double duty for a crowd that’s completely locked in. Building on the momentum of Dijon’s annual December takeover (back-to-back sold out nights in the Main Hall), it only made sense to hand over the keys to the Lamborghini.
She came correct. Dijon always titles her Knockdown Center events, and this one is named “Stamina.” The flier is a Grace Jones-worthy photo that proves why she’s such an unstoppable icon. In addition to being a DJ of blinding technique and a musical digger par excellence, Dijon positively oozes star charisma. Take one look at this picture and tell us you don’t want to come see this show? The lineup rules, too. Dijon has invited an elite crew of some of NY’s best current house DJs. Nowadays residents JADALAREIGN and musclecars meet up with STUDIO regular Kilopatrah Jones for a properly soulful session. “The culture I come from, you had to bring something,” said Honey Dijon. “You had to have a personality or a talent. You had to bring something to the party instead of taking something away.” She keeps bringing it.
Two weeks later, on June 15th, South African breakouts Major League DJz make their debut at the venue. There’s two ways this goes: either you’d never heard of them, or this is a big deal to you. MLD are some of the most exciting amapiano DJs in the world today, and their Balcony Mix series has grown into one of the genre’s major hubs.
Amapiano’s loungey, lush mix of kwaito, deep house and spacious hip hop is, of course, perfect summery feel good music and a no-brainer for the Ruins. More interestingly, it feels like a global second coming of the classic NY/NJ iteration of deep house sound developed back in the ‘90s by artists like Kerri Chandler, Louie Vega and many more. Diving into the grooving, introspective and at times even mournful sounds of modern amapiano feels a bit like tossing classic Strictly Rhythm 12”s from ‘92, although it sounds utterly distinct.
For the last two years, Outline’s summer edition has split its programming between the Ruins and the Atrium, bringing a more raucous crew of performers to match the rising temperatures. This year goes all in on the punk vibes, collaborating with the temporarily-shuttered punk/metal institution Saint Vitus on the Ruins stage. It will be ferocious. The day starts off with the incredibly-named Couch Slut, who conjures vicious ‘90s queercore (any Mukilteo Faeries fans reading this? If so, drop a line) and Riot Grrrl with a particularly modern twist. Cloakroom’s dark jangle and wavey stoner-indie sway follow, before King Woman’s dramatic, folk-infused, wrathful doom closes out the night. (And that’s not to mention The Armed, Chat Pile, and Ragana ripping through our indoor Hall, that very night.)
There’s a lot more coming: Maceo Plex on June 8, for one, as well as a Pride weekend blowout, tons of Tiki Discos, Soul Summit, Hot Since 82, and much much more. The weather just turned for the better this week, time to take those shorts of our winter storage and crack the sunscreen. Ruins season is almost here.
